Every driver on the road must ensure they’re operating their vehicle in the safest manner possible. One hazard they have to avoid is distracted driving. This encompasses a variety of factors that they should ensure they don’t succumb to while they’re behind the wheel.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognizes three distinct types of distractions that can impact drivers. Some distractions fall into one of these categories, but others can fall into multiple categories.

Cognitive distractions

Cognitive distractions affect the driver’s ability to think and reason. This distraction can occur unexpectedly, such as falling into deep thought about something going on at home or at work. Even speaking to other passengers in the vehicle can be a cognitive distraction.

Visual distractions

Visual distractions prevent the driver from looking at the road. Even seemingly innocent activities can fall into this category. Looking at a billboard or turning around to check on children qualify as visual distractions.

Manual distractions

Manual distractions lead to the driver taking their hands off the steering wheel. This can include activities like taking a bite of a burger or changing the air conditioner settings.

Sadly, all distractions can lead to catastrophic crashes. It only takes a few seconds for this to occur, so there’s no safe length of being distracted for drivers.

Victims of distracted driving crashes may need medical care, which can be costly. These innocent individuals may decide to seek compensation for the financial damages they have because of the crash. Working with someone familiar with these matters may be beneficial for victims so their case moves forward as they heal.
