Signs of a serious brain injury after a car accident

On Behalf of | Jan 13, 2023 | Car Accidents

Getting involved in a car accident is one of the most common ways for people to suffer traumatic brain injuries. However, they sometimes don’t fully grasp how serious these injuries are at the time. It’s always important to talk to medical professionals and get treatment, especially with an organ that is as important and fragile as the human brain.

As a result, it’s important to know about the different potential signs and symptoms that you may see if a brain injury does occur. The ones below are not an exhaustive list, but they give you an idea of some of the most common things you should look for.

Sensory issues

First off, your senses may feel overstimulated. People often talk about being incredibly sensitive to loud sounds or bright lights. Others will talk about not being able to focus and having blurred vision. In some cases, people’s sense of taste can even change.

Loss of memory

Memory issues are also fairly common. Some people will only forget a few seconds or a few minutes, perhaps while they were unconscious. Others will forget the whole day and may appear very confused as to how they were even involved in an accident – because they don’t even remember getting in the car.

Loss of consciousness

One of the most important physical symptoms to note is a loss of consciousness. Even if this is just for a second or two, it is still important. If it persists for minutes or even hours, then it could be a very severe brain injury.

Worsening symptoms

Finally, if any of the symptoms that you do have start to get worse, that can be an indicator that the brain injury is also growing more serious. For instance, there could be bleeding near the brain that puts pressure on your brain cells, causing you to feel like you have a headache that is turning into a migraine.

Brain injuries can have a drastic impact on your life, so be sure you know how to seek financial compensation if someone else caused the accident.
